About some years ago, I bought a smartphone, specifically a Tecno Y2 but subsequently, when I started using that phone, I discovered lot.

I discovered that the particular phone did not suit what I needed because a lot of problems sprung up during usage.

As a result of lot activities I engage in on my smartphone, my phone hung a lot of times and exhibited slow operations.

I regretted not looking out for some important things, before buying the smartphone out of ignorance and curiosity of getting a new smartphone.

After this experience of mine, I got to understand that there are things that make a smartphone better than the other. Today, smartphone has become part of our day to day activities.

We surf the internet, take pictures, watch movies, make video calls, phone calls etc. on the same phone.

Imagine not using a smartphone with a better capacity to suit these activities! You may not enjoy using that smartphone.

Before you get a new smartphone ask yourself these two questions. What do I need a smartphone for? Can my budget cover the purchase? If you have a budget, stick to that budget.

You know I mentioned considering what you really need a smartphone for. You can get a phone that fit all you need for quite a price.

If you do not have enough money at hand, do not try to buy a phone as soon as it is out because you will definitely pay a great amount for that.

New smartphones prices reduce drastically with time so do not be in a hurry.

Nowadays, lot of smartphones have best screens, camera features but this may not be the best for you.

In this regard, when considering buying a smartphone, you have to separate your need from want, this may seem Economics but it pays!

Your need should be considered over your wants! To avoid any regret, you must check out for the following directions in relation to your need when you have it in mind to but a new smartphone

1.         Battery Capacity

The notion of most persons behind buying a new smartphone is either to join the trend of upgrade to a better device or joining the societal trend of having a classy smartphone.

Only a few consider their needs. A smartphone with a great battery life pays a lot. Consider a smartphone, which has a battery with a very high number of mAh.

Mostly, smartphones with bigger mAh batteries comes with big phones. A smartphone with a long-lasting battery capacity can last up to a day without recharging its battery.

However, if you buy a phone with a great battery capacity, the position of your battery lasting much longer depends on your phone activities. Do not expect your phone to stay up to 2 days having increased your screen brightness, play games, watch videos, surf the internet regularly.

Nevertheless, there are smartphone attachments that can drain battery like operating system, processor and the screen size.

2.         Internal Storage Capacity, Processor and its Random Access Memory (RAM)

It depends on what you consider in mind to use your phone for. If you are actually not the 24/7 phone type, who run a lot of operations like playing games, watch movies, surf the internet, download applications you are good to go as you do not have to be bothered about phone processor, internal storage and RAM.

All these play important roles to determine how smart and fast operations on your smartphone will be.

I am actually a 24/7 phone user who download regularly, check out applications daily, watch videos, make calls and surf the internet daily. Even though I am not the game player type, I still found myself using the wrong phone.

It got to a point I had to wait for like two minutes to make calls and at times I found it difficult to pick calls due to hanging.

If you want to buy a phone and you are the type of user like me, check out the internal storage capacity, processor and RAM. You will definitely appreciate it! Try out smartphones with 2GB or 3GB RAM capacity.

I will not encourage you to buy a smartphone with a RAM storage capacity below 2GB. Getting a phone with a unique processor will help a lot, as you can engage in any activities on your phone without any hitch.

The essence of a good Random Access Memory (RAM) is seen when running different activities on your smartphone concurrently especially open phone applications as RAM stores these phone applications for the processor to do it work of running these applications and activities without hitch.

So imagine the rate at which a low RAM capacity and a low quality processor will act. A phone processor speed will tell if you are actually the 24/7 phone type, who run a lot of operations on phone, consider getting a phone with a high-end processor.

A good processor enables better and faster phone performance. A larger internal storage capacity should also be looked out for when buying a smartphone.

There are some already installed applications that dominate some amount of the phone internal storage. You can try out a phone with 32GB capacity.

If you are actually the 24/7 phone type, that run lot of operations on phone. It is not advisable to go below that.

3.         People’s Notions and Past Experiences

Do not forget you are getting a smartphone you have not used or bought before. People experiences about that particular phone, will guide in the path of opting in or opting out of the desire to go for that smartphone.

Trust me; they know the pros and cons attached to owning that smartphone of your choice. This will also go a long way, to speak about the company’s reputation in producing a rock solid phone.

4.         Camera

One of smartphone features that most people consider before buying a smartphone is camera, which makes it one of the bestselling points of phone.

Camera technology on smartphones has been made affordable nowadays, that you can still get a good shot of what you want on mid-range phone. It is only when an extra shot is needed that is when you can different a better phone camera than the other.

When considering a phone with a great camera features, consider the megapixels, photo quality, autofocus etc. However, megapixels do not really matter. Taking better photos, making videos depends on software processing, sensory chipset.

Biggest weakness of phone cameras is taking night shot in really contrasting light conditions. This is where getting an expensive phone will come into play.

5.         Screen Size and Display

As I mentioned earlier, what you need matters most depending on what activities you want to use your phone for. When looking for the best display possible, contrast, colours screen brightness is involve.

What display is all about is viewing angle and resolution (measured based on 400 pixels per inch at both length and breadth) and trust me, expensive smartphones are the ones with very great display having higher number of pixels.

Quality of display speaks on the higher number of pixels at length and breadth. Consider a phone with a sharp display if you are the outdoor phone user type. Screen size also ought to be taken into consideration, when you want to buy a smartphone in relation to your need.

Your budget plays a great role here as screen sizes of smartphones depend on the preference of phone buyers. You can get a smartphone with a small screen, medium or big screen based on your choice and activities.

So, I can only just guide you not restrict you in this direction. If your activities are limited to Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram alone, then do not go beyond a medium sized phone but if you are the concurrent video player, game player and social media type go for a large screen.

6.         Durability

You cannot use a smartphone forever but still out of curiosity of getting a smartphone you should still consider a long-lasting one. I am giving you the advice of doing drop test, scratch test and even water test to ensure your phone can survive some unforeseen situations.

Also, consider your environment whether home, place of work, school People’s notion and experience may guide you in this line of direction as to whether their experience with such smartphone was a terrible one with respect to durability as they have had enough experience of using that particular phone.

7.         Operating System (OS)

iOS or Android? The most used is Android while iOS is an operating system created by Apple for iPhone. ‘As far your money can go and cover’, consider this first before anything.

You do not need a loan to get things right and be fine. If are on the fence between iOS and Android I can give you guidelines. You may try out iPhone if you want cool and easy operations especially when getting operating system updates while it takes time for updates like that to happen with Android.

Your experience so far with Android, may direct you also whether you have tried out Lollipop, Marshmallow or Nougat in the past but I will recommend Marshmallow and Nougat. Again, what you need matter most in relation to your pocket!

I am usually a very early adapter when it comes to smartphones and I change my phone every two years or so. I have been a loyal Samsung customer for a while so I always buy their newest model as they launch it, in February, knowing that it’s always going to be the best on the market.
